Sea Cans for Big White Builds and Homes

Serving Big White and the Okanagan Highland

Big White is a ski village on Big White Mountain, the highest summit in the Okanagan Highland, reached from Kelowna by Highway 33. The village is a mix of condo hotels, townhouse complexes and vacation homes. Contractors and property managers who build and look after them use containers as lockable site storage for lumber, fixtures, renovation tools and furniture between jobs, on a mountain that gets deep snow every winter.

Units leave our Kamloops yard by way of Kelowna and climb Highway 33 to the resort turnoff. Pick a 20ft or a 40ft, in standard or high cube, with double doors or a side door along the length. A wind and watertight inspection comes first, and one quoted number covers container and delivery. Plan on a plowed, firm pad with room for the truck to back in and turn around.

FAQ

Big White shipping container FAQ

Straight answers on buying, delivering and setting up a container in Big White and across the Okanagan & Shuswap.

Buying in Big White

Can I get a shipping container delivered to Big White, BC?

Yes. Valleyview delivers new and used containers to homes, businesses and job sites in Big White and across the Okanagan and Shuswap, most of them set down by a tilt-deck truck that slides the container onto your prepared site. Distance changes the delivery quote rather than whether Big White, BC, is served; what decides whether a particular site works is the route in and the access at the drop spot.

How much does it cost to deliver a container to Big White, BC?

It’s quoted for your site by distance and access; Valleyview doesn’t publish a flat delivery rate or a free-delivery zone. The price depends on the distance from where the container ships (the Kamloops yard or a partner depot) to your address in Big White, the roads on the way in, and how easily the truck can line up and back in. Delivery isn’t included in listed container prices, but the delivery quote itself is free.

How long does it take to get a container delivered to Big White, BC?

The delivery date is agreed when you order rather than promised in advance. It depends on where your container is coming from, the distance to Big White, your site, and road and weather conditions. With your quote, Valleyview confirms access, quotes the delivery and gives you a delivery window, so mention any deadline you’re working to when you ask.

Is there a Valleyview container yard in Big White, BC?

No. Valleyview’s only yard is in Kamloops, at D3-1764 Kelly Douglas Rd, and Valleyview doesn’t operate a depot in Big White; your container comes from that yard or from a partner depot and is quoted delivered to your address. You don’t need to visit to buy: request a quote by phone, email or the website’s quote form, confirm the order when you accept the quote, and inspect the container when it arrives.

Which containers can I get delivered to Big White, BC?

Any unit in Valleyview’s catalogue: the new 10ft; new and used 20ft containers, plus new 20ft double-door and side-door units and a 20ft refrigerated container; and 40ft containers, new as high cubes (one with side doors) or used in standard or high cube height. The live inventory page shows units already in Valleyview’s yard, and other units can be sourced through partner depots on request and quoted delivered to Big White. Availability, especially for the 10ft, is confirmed with your quote.

How do I check a container’s condition before it’s delivered to Big White, BC?

Ask for the details before you order. Each listing on the live inventory page is a unit in the Kamloops yard, shown with a photo when available, its recorded condition and its unit number when legible, and you can ask about the floor or any other detail before you commit. For a container sourced from a partner depot, ask what photos and condition details come with your quote, and inspect it again when it arrives.

See the yard inventory
Is the listed price what I’ll pay for a container in Big White, BC?

The listed range is a guide to the container itself, and your quote confirms the exact figure. Where a container lands in its range depends on its condition, its colour if it’s new and where it’s sourced, which is why buyers in different towns can see different figures for the same container. Prices are in Canadian dollars plus tax, with delivery quoted separately.

How do I prepare my site for container delivery in Big White, BC?

A straight, clear approach for the truck and a firm, level spot for the container. For a 20ft, allow 72 feet of total clear length in a straight line, including where the container will sit, plus at least 10 to 12 feet of width and 16 feet of overhead clearance; a 40ft needs more, so ask. Compacted gravel, asphalt or concrete works, ideally with blocks under the corners. Before you book, walk the route in and measure the narrowest gate or gap.

Will the delivery truck fit down my lane or driveway in Big White, BC?

It depends on whether the truck can back straight in. A tilt-deck can’t turn while the container comes off, so lanes, gates, parked cars, overhead wires and trees along the approach all matter, along with room in front of the doors once it’s down. If your spot doesn’t pass, sort it out before delivery day by clearing the route or choosing another spot, since access problems found on the day can delay a delivery.

What size container is right for a property in Big White, BC?

Choose a 20ft if space or delivery access is tight, and a 40ft if you need volume. A 20ft gives about 1,170 cubic feet on a footprint roughly the size of a single-car garage; a 40ft gives about 2,390, or about 2,690 as a high cube, but needs more room for the truck. Check the setbacks that apply to your lot before you choose, and mark the footprint with room for the doors to swing.

Is winter container delivery possible in Big White, BC?

It depends on the roads in and the state of your site on the day. In the Okanagan and Shuswap, snow, ice and road conditions can move a date, and Valleyview’s terms exclude liability for weather delays. Frozen ground can make some sites easier to reach, and remote sites are planned around seasonal access windows. Clear snow from the route and drop spot, and choose a spot that stays firm after the thaw.

What should I do to keep a container in good shape in Big White, BC?

Plan for temperature swings and winter cold. Keep snow and wet leaves off the roof, keep the vents clear and use desiccants so condensation doesn’t drip on your things. Avoid heating it on and off, which is harder on a container than no heat at all. Before winter, put graphite or a dry silicone lubricant in the lock, and after the spring thaw check that the container is still level.

Who do I ask about shipping container rules in Big White, BC?

The local government or other authority responsible for land use at your address, usually through its planning or building department; on First Nation reserve land, that’s the Nation’s own lands, housing or public works process. If the parcel is in the ALR, say so on the first call, since that changes which office you deal with. Valleyview isn’t the permit office and can’t confirm what applies to your lot, so give them your address and what the container is for, and ask before it’s delivered.

Read the permits guide
Can you build a container office or workshop for a site in Big White, BC?

Yes. Site offices, workshops, cold storage and other builds are made in Valleyview’s Kamloops yard and delivered to Big White, BC, like a plain container, with delivery quoted by distance and site access. Every build starts from an inspected, wind and watertight container, and one itemized quote covers the container, each modification and delivery before any steel gets cut. Timing depends on the spec and is confirmed in your quote.

Custom container builds
Is lease-to-own available for containers delivered to Big White, BC?

Yes. Lease-to-own is offered on 20ft and 40ft containers delivered to Big White, with the monthly payment, the term and delivery itemized in one up-front quote. The monthly cost depends on the container’s size, condition and your delivery location. Every payment builds toward ownership, and you can ask for a payout figure at any time. Valleyview doesn’t rent containers; lease-to-own is the monthly option.

How lease-to-own works
Do you deliver to other towns in the Okanagan and Shuswap besides Big White, BC?

Yes. Deliveries in the Okanagan and Shuswap also go to Kelowna, West Kelowna, Penticton, Vernon and Summerland, along with the rest of the region. Every delivery is quoted for its own address by distance and site access. Don’t see your community on the site? Call (778) 694-4050; Valleyview delivers to off-grid sites, ranches, First Nations communities and end-of-road locations across BC.

How do I order a shipping container for delivery to Big White, BC?

Start with a quote by phone at (778) 694-4050, by email, or through the website’s quote form. Include the container type, your address or postal code, your timeline and any access concerns, plus photos if the route in is tight. Quotes are free and don’t commit you to buy. When you accept, Valleyview confirms the order with an invoice or confirmation, and the delivery date is agreed at that point.

Sizes & specs

What is the difference between a high cube and a standard container?

A high cube is one foot taller: 9ft 6in outside instead of 8ft 6in, with about 8ft 10in of interior height instead of about 7ft 10in. It is not longer or wider, so it sits on the same footprint and needs the same level, well-drained ground. High cubes are built to the same ISO standards from the same CORTEN steel, and a 40ft high cube holds about 2,690 cubic feet against about 2,390 for a standard 40ft.

High cube vs standard

New & used containers

What’s the difference between a new and a used shipping container?

A new one-trip container has made a single loaded voyage from the factory, so it arrives with straight walls, intact factory paint, tight door seals and an unstained floor. A used container has been in shipping service and shows it, with surface rust, dents and faded paint. Valleyview’s catalogue lists its used units as cargo-worthy, and containers are inspected before sale. New costs more; used suits storage where cosmetic wear doesn’t matter.

Prices

Why don’t the units on your inventory page show a price?

Each yard unit is quoted as a delivered price for your address rather than shown with a sticker price. The inventory page lists only containers physically in Valleyview’s Kamloops yard, and choosing a listing starts a quote request for that unit. For a guide to what each size and condition costs, the products page shows listed price ranges in Canadian dollars plus tax and delivery.

Buying & paying

Do I need to pay a deposit when I order a container?

A deposit may be required to secure your order. The amount isn’t published on the website; it’s set out with your quote and invoice, along with the rest of the payment terms. Ask about the deposit when you receive your quote so you know what’s needed to confirm the order and how the remaining balance will be handled.

Delivery

How do I give directions to an off-grid site with no street address?

Send GPS coordinates or a map pin for the drop spot, plus a description of the route in: road names, gates, forks, creek crossings and the last stretch to the site. Valleyview confirms coordinates before an off-grid delivery and plans the route rather than trusting map apps where they stop being accurate. Photos of the access road and the drop spot help with the planning.

Can you deliver a container to a construction or job site?

Yes. A job site needs the same things as any delivery: firm, level ground where the container will sit and a straight, clear approach for the tilt-deck truck, with room overhead. Keep that path free of parked machines, material piles and people on the day, and name a site contact who can meet the driver, confirm placement and sign the delivery receipt. Site requirements are confirmed when you get your quote.

Preparing your site

Should I clear grass and brush from around my container?

Yes. Grass and brush growing against the bottom rail hold moisture on the steel that carries the floor, which invites rust on the rails and cross-members. Clear the drop spot of debris before delivery, then keep the ground around the container trimmed so water drains away and you can see the rails and blocks when you check them. Trimmed brush also takes away cover a thief could use.

Owning a container

Can I get a lock box welded on when I buy a container?

You can ask for one when you request your quote. A lock box is a heavy steel shroud welded over the hasp so the padlock sits in a pocket of steel, out of reach of bolt cutters. Some containers already have one, so ask whether the unit you are buying does. If it doesn’t, Valleyview can quote welding one on as part of its modification work. For a container you already own, ask whether it can be done.

Permits & bylaws

How do zoning bylaws classify a storage container?

Many bylaws treat a storage container as an accessory structure or accessory building, the same category as a shed or detached garage, and some newer bylaws name shipping containers specifically. The classification decides which rules apply, such as where it can sit, how large it can be and whether it needs screening. Ask your local government which clause covers a container on your property.

Custom builds

What does a custom build’s published starting price include?

The catalogue price of the base container plus each modification listed on that package at its published menu rate, in Canadian dollars before tax and delivery. Anything a package lists as quoted per design, such as heat, finished walls or shelving, is not in that figure. You can add or swap modifications, and each change is priced line by line from the same menu the yard quotes and invoices from.

Packages and price menu

Business & lease-to-own

Can you paint a container in our company colours and add our logo?

Yes. Valleyview paints containers in factory RAL colours, matching your brand colour to the closest RAL shade and confirming it with you before painting, then applies cut vinyl logos, lettering and contact details, or full-side graphics, in exterior-rated materials. The work is done in Valleyview’s yard before delivery and quoted per design, with the container, paint, decals and delivery on one itemized price.

Refrigerated containers

What is a reefer container?

A reefer is a refrigerated shipping container: an insulated steel box with its own refrigeration unit on one end. The unit draws air from inside, cools or heats it to the set temperature and circulates it through a T-shaped floor so the temperature stays even from bottom to top. The walls are filled with high-density polyurethane foam. Valleyview sells a 20ft reefer for cold or frozen storage.

Uses

Can a shipping container house a generator, pump or control panel?

Yes. An equipment enclosure needs secure access, airflow sized to the equipment and sealed paths for cable and pipe. Valleyview’s enclosure package starts from an inspected used 20ft with a steel personnel door; vents, penetrations, insulation, sound attenuation and larger electrical service are quoted per design. Send the make, model, dimensions, weight, airflow and clearance figures, a site photo and the power available. Fuel supply, the exhaust run and commissioning stay with your equipment supplier.
